Another option is to rent DVDs from a kiosk machine, as popularized in the US by RedBox. There are a number of companies starting to offer DVD kiosks in Canada. I've got a map of some of the locations.
Zip.ca - currently has over 70 kiosks, in Metro grocery stores in Ottawa, Montreal and the greater Toronto area. New releases and Blu-ray discs are $2/day; other titles are $1.
Best Buy - announced in June 2011 that they would be rolling out DVD kiosks nationally later in the year. They had already been running some in western Canada for some time (around 40 locations), and as of November 2011 had 93 units in western Canada. Rentals appear to be $2/day for all titles, including Blu-ray. After 10 days you are deemed to have bought the disc; $28 for a DVD and $35 for a Blu-ray. Rentals are due back at 7pm, so late night renters don't get the full 24 hours. You can view the current contents of a particular kiosk online from the website, and reserve a specific title at a specific kiosk.
Playdium - has around 80 MovieMagic kiosks in Ontario, including Walmart locations. $2 rentals, $1 for additional days. No Blu-ray.
DVDPlay/Safeway - There are close to 100 DVDPlay machines located in Safeway stores in BC and Alberta. The website claims $1.79/rental, but I've seem reports it may now be $2.
Redbox - has said that it will be expanding into Canada at some time later in 2012, likely with a "few hundred" units. This will be very significant for Canadian kiosks, as they completely control the US kiosk market.
